Deception Pass State Park to Port Townsend

After a great night’s sleep at possibly the best hiker/biker site we’ve visited we had a pleasant ride through Whidbey Island, highlighted by views of Penn Cove along Madrona Way.

That night we joined in the festivities at Fort Worden just outside cute Port Townsend. We saw a concert featuring different fiddle music artists, who were in town for a weeklong fiddle festival. Then we gathered with the rest of town on the windy slopes overlooking the harbor to watch some fireworks. For some reason a merry group of folks young and old celebrated whenever any firework remotely close to the color purple exploded by yelling “Purple!” Their enthusiasm rubbed off. Before we knew it we and a growing section of the crowd were yelling purple too. That night we celebrated the old red, white, and purple!
